Spinal and Extremities Adjustments
Utilizing specific chiropractic adjustments in conjunction with other services offered below, Dr Smith's goal is to remove structural or nervous system irritation that may be a major contributing factor to your general health. You will be placed on an adjusting table where Dr. Smith will apply quick pressure and pulls to areas of your body. You will likely hear cracks and pops, but these adjustments are generally painless, much like the cracking and popping of your finger joints. In fact, you may even feel immediate relief from some pain. For your best comfort, we recommend wearing clothing without buttons, zippers and buckles, like athletic shorts or yoga pants.
The PulStar Chiropractic Treatment
Love to feel good but don't like all the bending, cracking and popping associated with chiropractic care? By utilizing the PulStar’s sophisticated computer analysis, Dr. Smith can pinpoint your problem areas with precision. The information is then charted graphically on a computer monitor, and saved for each visit to visualize your progress.
Treatment with the PulStar feels like quick, small taps on your back precisely to the affected areas. This relieves pressure on the nerve, allows the nerve to heal, and restores the nerve’s ability to transmit signals to the brain more freely. Most importantly, it helps relieve the pain! After a treatment with the PulStar, Dr. Smith takes an additional reading to show you the improvement.
Heat and Cold Therapy
Dr. Smith may alternate between heat and ice therapy to help treat back pain. Ice packs may be used to numb the back for a 10 to 15 minute period and then switched with a heating pad to restore blood flow to the area and promote faster healing.
Dr. Smith may provide you with instructions for a home-based exercise program focusing on stretching and strengthening the back, the neck and extremities. Many studies have reported the importance of exercises in managing acute and chronic low back pain, strengthening the lower back, and improving quality of life. The strength of the abdominal muscles was also found to be able to differentiate between those with chronic back pain vs. without chronic back pain.
Massage therapy is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension. At an additional cost, Dr. Smith has a highly skilled certified massage therapist on hand to help massage soft tissues and improve circulation, reduce swelling and inflammation and encourage quicker healing.
Dr. Smith may use a traction massage table, where you lay facing up as a system of rollers move about the back, stretching and massaging the muscles in the back. Traction may reduce pressure on nerve roots, decompress discs and stretch the spine.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Electrical Muscle Stimulation passes the softer tissues and provides heat to denser tissues; it relaxes the muscles and connective tissues, decreases muscle spasms, and accelerates the healing process by increasing circulation. Small electric pads are placed on the area of concern, and you'll feel a slight tingling sensation in the treatment area while being treated.
Dr. Smith may provide you with tips on how an improved diet may help with your back pain; he may also offer recommended dietary supplements to be sure your body is getting all the nutrients it needs for effective healing.
With ultrasound therapy, sound waves create deep heat therapy that is applied to the soft tissues and joints. Essentially micro-massaging the soft tissues and joints, ultrasound therapy can help reduce back pain, stiffness, and spasms while increasing blood flow and accelerating the healing process.
Dr. Smith may advise you on a variety of lifestyle modifications, including diet and nutritional programs, self-care, coping strategies, and more.
Custom Orthotic Fitting
Orthotics can help you achieve a balanced foundation and stabilized pelvis. If you experience hip, knee, foot and/or lower back pain, orthotics can help you realign your body and take pressure off the back, neck, shoulders and hips. Orthotics can be prescribed by Dr. Smith and can last well over a year in most cases.
Dr. Smith has an x-ray machine in house to help aid him in determining injury to the spine and/or where to adjust the spine. X-ray is typically used after a patient has sustained a significant traumatic injury or a chronic, long-standing pain that has not responded to or resolved with previous treatment.
Doctors of Chiropractic are generally NOT licensed to write medical prescriptions or perform surgery in the U.S. Our philosophy is to avoid the potential dangerous side effects of medications and to help the body heal naturally.
